Providence Health & Services Sterile Processing Technician in Portland, Oregon


Providence is calling a Sterile Processing Technician - Sterile Processing (1.0 FTE, Days) to Providence St Vincent Medical Center in Portland, OR.

We are seeking Sterile Processing Technician - Sterile Processing that will be responsible for the effective cleaning, inspection, maintenance, proper sterilization and distribution of sterile instrumentation and equipment. Works collaboratively with other departments to ensure all supplies, instrumentation and equipment are available for surgical cases as well as other procedures requiring sterile supplies and/or instrumentation.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Instrument Decontamination:

  • Serve as an expert to clinical departments in the areas of instrumentation and sterilization of reusable instruments and devices

  • Anticipates workload and coordinates with operating room staff

  • Prioritize instrumentation upon arrival ensuring proper initial care

  • Sort instruments

  • Disassemble and reassemble instruments correctly when appropriate

  • Inspect instruments and tests for proper function. Initiates repairs for any malfunctioning instrumentation

  • Select appropriate cleaning and disinfection method, and ensures adequate cleaning of all instrumentation, trouble shoots equipment

  • Complete appropriate documentation

  • Instrument Assembly:

  • Correctly identify and organize instrumentation in preparation for assembly

  • Inspect instrumentation to ensure proper cleaning and instrument function

  • Take initiative to follow up on identified issues

  • Assemble instrumentation according to pre-established guides

  • Ensure appropriate wrapping/container for sterilization method

  • Sterilization:

  • Select appropriate sterilization method

  • Ensure proper parameters for sterilization

  • Conduct quality control measures to ensure parameters are met

  • Take appropriate follow-up action when parameters are not met

  • Trouble shoot equipment to ensure proper functioning

  • Complete documentation

  • Sterile Storage and Distribution:

  • Ensure proper sterile storage of instrumentation, supplies, and equipment following established guidelines

  • Utilize instrument tracking effectively to manage inventory

  • Handle sterile packages appropriately. Inspects sterile packages' integrity prior to distribution

  • Review surgery schedule and anticipates instrumentation needs

  • Review and maintains adequate inventory

  • Assemble department specific kits according to the 'recipe.'

  • Stewardship of Resources:

  • Care for surgical instrumentation and patient care equipment throughout cleaning and/or sterilization process

  • Organize and prioritize work assignments in an efficient and cost effective manner

  • Instrument Coordination:

  • Proactively anticipate needs and initiates appropriate planning on day-to-day basis to ensure instrumentation requirements are met for area of specialty

  • Maintain inventory control of all surgical instrumentation processed in department for area of specialty

  • Be accountable for ongoing assessment of instrumentation related to areas of responsibility and for creation and implementation of new trays

  • Troubleshoot defective or damaged instruments

  • Implement instrument set content changes, establishes weight limit for trays and assists with standardization of instrumentation in coordination with OR leadership

  • Maintain set and tray specifications and provides documentation for database

  • Be responsible for ensuring instrument count sheets are updated in collaboration with the OR leadership and the SPM Coordinator

  • Leadership:

  • Coordinate shift activities as needed in the absence of the shift supervisor

  • Act as role model, coach and mentor of staff

  • Proactively communicate on an ongoing basis with staff and OR staff

  • Teamwork:

  • Assist in training of caregivers in department specific functions

  • Demonstrate commitment to teamwork by contributing to meet department needs

  • Complete all assigned tasks and communicates to incoming shift

  • Coordinate activities with other members of the health care team

  • Share knowledge and expertise willingly

  • Conflict resolution:

  • Contribute to resolving conflict

  • Utilize problem solving skills to promote a positive work environment

  • Seek assistance to resolve conflict when needed

  • Give and receive constructive feedback

  • Department Accountability:

  • Contribute to and attends staff meetings and in-services

  • Actively participate in department projects or committees

  • Consistently utilize downtime productively

  • Education/Professional Development:

  • Maintain and enhance professional expertise through appropriate continuing education

  • Participates in training of new technicians and students

  • In collaboration with Educator, provides education regarding new instrumentation for area of specialty:

  • Acts as a preceptor for the orientation of new employees and ongoing development in collaboration with the Educator

  • May be accountable for ensuring current reference materials are available for staff including pictures as appropriate

  • May act as a resource in all specialty areas

  • May collaborate with the department clinical educator, provides education regarding new instrumentation for area of specialty

  • Acts as a preceptor for the orientation of new employees and ongoing development in collaboration with the Educator

  • May be accountable for ensuring current reference materials are available for staff including pictures as appropriate

  • May act as a resource in all specialty areas

  • Performance Improvement:

  • Actively participate in department quality improvement efforts

  • Report quality issues and participates in resolution

  • Suggest topic for further education

  • Understand the safety risks involved in the department work and remains alert to dangers. Is safety minded; always alert and mindful of ways to work in a manner that keeps self and others safe


Sterile Processing Technician 1:

Required qualifications for this position includes:

  • High school diploma -OR- equivalent

  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) certification, or a Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) certification, within 18 months of hire

  • successful completion of a sterile processing course -OR- one (1) year of healthcare experience

  • Experience using personal computer and basic software programs

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • One (1) year of sterile processing experience

  • Medical experience preferred

Sterile Processing Technician 2:

Required qualifications for this position includes:

  • High School diploma -OR- equivalent

  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) certification -OR- Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) certification

  • Three (3) years of sterile processing experience

  • Experience using personal computer and basic software applications
