Providence Health & Services Coder 1 - Remote in Portland, Oregon


Providence is calling a Coder 1 - Finance Operations (1.0 FTE, Days) to Providence Office Park Portland in Portland, OR

Remote/Hybrid Position - Must live within 2 hours of Providence Office Park Portland and 1 hour from PMG Medford Campus (PMMC Campus)

We are seeking a Coder 1 - Finance Operations who will perform coding audits and review of outpatient provider services to support coding optimization and compliance for the medical group. This is an entry level position supporting multiple specialties across the medical group with coding for evaluation and management and procedural services. In addition to the audit and review work, the Coder 1 will work side by side with outpatient providers providing ongoing feedback, coaching, and support with the code entry process, documentation, ICD-9, ICD-10, and HCC coding in alignment with current medical group reimbursement requirements.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Read and interpret all documents contained in the medical record to identify all diagnosis and procedures

  • Consult with providers/staff for clarification when conflicting or ambiguous information is recorded

  • Code identified diagnosis and procedures following national and PHS coding guidelines

  • Use Code Correct, Coding Institute Coding Alert, and current ICD-9/ICD-10 and CPT manuals

  • Select principal diagnosis and procedure in accordance with coding standards, CMS requirements and knowledge of prospective payment systems

  • Enter all missing charges into EPIC system, with careful attention to adding notes to clarify clinic charges on a non-clinic charging system


Required qualifications for this position includes:

  • Highschool Diploma -OR- equivalent

  • American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) -OR- American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) certified coding credential

  • Any AHIMA -OR- AAPC coding-related credential; credential-eligible applicants may apply

  • Two (2) years Working in a medical office or physician billing office, or equivalent office experience

  • Proven history of proactively identifying, resolving and escalating issues that impact business and documentation outcomes

  • A track record in organizing and planning with demonstrated ability to effectively manage time and achieve results in a fast paced environment

Preferred qualifications for this position includes:

  • Experience working with physicians, with an emphasis on coaching and communication

  • Electronic Medical Record (EMR) experience

  • Experience coaching and training physicians
