Providence Health & Services Unit Secretary/CNA - Surgical Short Stay Unit in Missoula, Montana


Providence is calling a Unit Secretary/CNA (Surgical Short Stay Unit) (0.0FTE, Variable) to St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula, Montana. In this position you will:

  • Accurately record specimens obtained and labels appropriately.

  • Apply patient identification and allergy bands.

  • Assist in orienting families.

  • Provide information to families in a positive and courteous manner.

  • Assist with patient’s comfort and mobility needs.

  • Complete accurate intake and output.

  • Complete and document personal inventory on newly admitted patient and places their belonging in the locked cupboard.

  • Complete delegated patient care activities and record and report variations.

  • Contribute to the assessment of the patient by collecting information for analysis by an RN.

  • Give complete and accurate report to licensed staff upon completion of tasks and duties.

  • Give complete and accurate reports to charge nurse throughout the shift and on coming shift.

  • Maintain the medical records according to institutional guidelines, ensuring that all required documents and results are properly posted and included in the patient’s record.

  • Obtain and records height and weight.

  • Orient patient and family to call lights and unit routines.

  • Answer patient calls promptly.

  • Perform clerical duties related to admission, transfers and discharges.

  • Perform restorative rehabilitative procedures as instructed.

  • Prepare patient for meals, serves snacks and assists with feeding.

  • Promptly collect specimens as instructed and anticipate the needs for Lab and EKG relevant to patients.

  • Provide activities of daily living for mechanically ventilated patients.

  • Provide age and culturally appropriate patient care, upon the criteria outlined in the Nursing Department Standard.

  • Provide for safety needs of patients.

  • Provide or assist patient with personal hygiene and elimination needs.

  • Report abnormal data element findings to licensed staff (including vital signs and O2 sats).

  • Safely assist patients with mobility and transfer needs.

  • Transcribe orders in a timely, neat, accurate manner subject to approval of licensed nurse. Asks for clarification when necessary.

  • Utilize positioning aids and turning schedules to protect pressure points and maintains normal anatomical alignment.

  • Perform quality control monitoring.

  • Complete preceptor evaluation as assigned.

  • Document critical incidents when necessary.

  • Be knowledgeable of unit functions and nursing care and shares this knowledge with others.

  • Serve as a preceptor for new health care assistants.

  • Welcome and encourages new staff members and students.

  • Present inservices or other educational offerings as assigned.

  • Assure that inter/intra departmental documentation is recorded, distributed and filed accurately and timely.

  • Maintain and monitors required records, files, and reports.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) card must be from the following authorized governing bodies: American Heart Association (AHA) - (BLS Provider), American Red Cross (ARC) - (BLS for Health Care Provider), or Military Training Network (MTN) – (Healthcare Provider) upon hire

  • Current Montana Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)

  • Successful completion of an orientation program or equivalent experience

Preferred qualification for this position include:

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Degree (GED)
