St. Joseph Health / Covenant Health Senior Laboratory Assistant - Laboratory in Mission Viejo, California
We are looking for a Senior Laboratory Assistant for the Laboratory Department at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center.
Location: Primarily Mission Viejo, CA. This position will float to Laguna Beach, CA as needed
Work Schedule: Per Diem/On Call
Shift: 10-hour, Evenings
The Senior Laboratory Assistant is responsible for the collections and processing of blood specimens, providing assessment and care for neonate, pediatric, adult, and geriatric in-patients, emergency room patients, and patients from other hospital services as needed. He/she will assist as necessary with outpatient specimen collection and processing. The inoculation of microbiology specimens onto primary media and the processing of specimens for referral testing are also responsibilities of the position. He/she is proficient in required competencies.
PHLEBOTOMY: Performs the phlebotomy duties according to the workload of the department. Uses proper patient identification and labels samples accordingly. Utilizes various phlebotomy equipment and techniques to obtain quality specimens using knowledge of specimen requirements for accurate testing. Introduces oneself when approaching patient and accomplishes venipunctures with minimal discomfort. Recognizes and addresses the age-related needs of the specific population served.
SPECIMEN PROCESSING: Accessions and distributes collected specimens using proper computer entry, centrifugation, and other processing in preparation for testing. Monitors specimens collected by nursing and identifies and corrects misordered tests before processing. Uses internal computer reports to ensure specimens are processed properly and workload flows smoothly.
MICROBIOLOGY SETUPS: Processes microbiology specimens, prepares slides correctly and in a timely manner to ensure quality results. Processing and Setups may include but not limited to samples of Blood, CSF, Body Fluid, O&P and Stool. Follow established guidelines set by the department for specimen processing.
REFERRED TESTS: Properly prepares specimens for referral testing to the appropriate reference laboratory or organization. Follows established guidelines set by the laboratory for processing in sendout bench area. Uses internal reports from the LIS and the outside organizations electronic systems to ensure specimens are processed correctly.
OTHER FUNCTIONS: Assists in the orientation and training of new employees and students to cover the above duties. Interacts with fellow workers in a manner that promotes a harmonious and cooperative environment. Uses spare time to assist others in their tasks. The transition between work shifts is facilitated by willingly completing work in progress. Unfinished work being left is well organized and easy to follow.
Good verbal communication skills for frequent contact with patients, nurses, doctors, and co-workers.
The ability to prioritize multiple tasks efficiently and effectively for the operation of his/her workload.
Demonstrated solid phlebotomy skills are required for patients of all age groups.
Ability to work with others in a flexible and cooperative manner.
Minimum Position Requirements:
Current California Certified Phlebotomy Technician license.
Healthcare provider level BLS Certification.
Preferred Position Qualifications:
Experience: 1 year Laboratory phlebotomy experience.
Licenses/Certifications: Valid phlebotomy certificate.
