Job Summary:

As a member of the surgical team, under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse Circulator, maintains the operating room sterile field; passes instruments, sutures, and sponges during surgery. Insures that proper aseptic technique is utilized to prevent contamination and infection. Assists the registered nurse with circulating duties.

Essential Functions:

  • Scrubs hands and arms; dons sterile operating room attire; organizes the sterile field; passes instruments, suture, and other needed sterile items to surgeon, anticipating the need. Holds retractors and cuts suture.

  • Selects supplies and equipment for case cart based on surgeon’s preference card; organizes supplies, equipment, and instruments in operating room.

  • Checks, adjusts, and operates equipment such as sterilizes, lights, suction, electrosurgical units, and diagnostic equipment. Documents appropriately according to hospital policy.

  • Helps prepare and care for specimens identified for laboratory analysis; applies dressings as directed.

  • Identifies, prepares, and labels medications given to the sterile field.

  • Cleans and restocks the OR suites.

  • AREA OF SPECIALIZATION: Certified Surgical Technician – Billing Coordinator:

  • Enters data from preference cards into existing billing program.

  • Makes corrections to preference cards and manages the upkeep of these cards by coordinating changes with Charge Nurses and Nurse Manager.

  • Works with staff nurses to clarify nomenclature and quantities of instruments, equipment, and supplies listed on cards.

  • Keeps preference card backup files and reference manual current.

  • Coordinates changes with all CMC OR locations.

  • Works closely with Material Management to see that preference cards are correctly utilized to enable reordering of supplies.

  • Serves as resource for OR secretarial staff by assisting them with initial and corrective billing. Imparts his/her clinical knowledge of surgical procedures to secretarial staff and assists them in identifying correct procedures when scheduling correct codes when coding, and correct supply items when billing.

  • Maintains proper storage of preference cards after billing completed and corrections are made.

  • Assists Nurse Manager in auditing the billing practice and utilization of preference cards.

  • May be called upon to utilize surgical technician skills and knowledge in the clinical setting.

  • May be required to work additional hours as necessary. Taking call as a "scrub tech" is optional.

  • AREA OF SPECIALIZATION: ESI Clinical Technician:

  • Enters data from preference cards into existing billing program.

  • Makes corrections to preference cards and manages the upkeep of these cards by coordinating changes with Charge Nurses and Nurse Manager.

  • Works with staff nurses to clarify nomenclature and quantities of instruments, equipment, and supplies listed on cards.

  • Coordinates preference card and billing protocol changes with all CMC OR locations.

  • Works closely with Materials Management to see that preference cards are correctly utilized to enable reordering of supplies.

  • Serves as resource for OR secretarial staff by assisting them with initial and corrective billing.

Minimum Position Requeirements

Education:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of Surgical Technology or Armed Services Surgical Technology program.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Certification in Surgical Technology within ninety (90) days of employment.

  • BLS (AHA) within thirty (30) days of employment.
