We are looking for an Obstetrics Scrub Technician for the Obstetrics Department at St. Joseph Hospital Eureka.

Location: Eureka, CA

Work Schedule: Full Time - 72 Biweekly Hours

Shift: 12-hour, Days

Job Summary:

Under the immediate supervision of the Nurse Manager, the OB Scrub Technician receives and registers patients for services and completes arrangements for admissions to the hospital. Performs specific routines, ensuring that each registration conforms to defined policies and procedures. Performs related tasks as required. Interacts with infant, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients in an age-appropriate manner. The OB Scrub Technician assists the RN or MD with procedures as appropriate, takes vital signs, changes beds, sets-up delivery tables, cleans delivery instruments and patient rooms. Employs intellectual, interpersonal and technical skills to perform scrubbing responsibilities and assists the Surgeon during surgical interventions on patients of various ages. Actively promotes family interaction and coordinates outpatient scheduling with doctors' offices.

Essential Functions:

  • All patients are registered accurately and proficiently, according to departmental policies and procedures.

  • All documents are complete, accurate and distributed according to procedure.

  • Orders processed in a timely and accurate manner.

  • Demonstrates skills as receptionist and central liaison between all facets of communication and activity in the department and forwards telephone calls to appropriate personnel. Interacts with patients and public in an age-appropriate manner.

  • Readies charts for admissions, discharge or transfer. Maintains neat and well-organized working environment. Is able to prioritize tasks. Cooperates with other team members.

  • Maintain inventory of supplies, to assure availability of supplies for continuing needs. Working with Central Services Materials to maintain appropriate par levels.

  • Responsible for ordering, stocking, and tracking of unit supplies with proper documentation.

  • Patient care duties include: taking vital signs, changing beds, assisting RN or MD with procedures as appropriate, setting up delivery tables, cleaning instruments, cleaning rooms, actively promote family interaction, tours.

  • SURGICAL SCRUB TECH DUTIES

  • Scrubs, gowns and gloves self per hospital policy. During surgical procedure, demonstrates proficient skill in providing appropriate instruments, supplies, suture as indicated by physician preference and specific circumstance of each case.

  • Assists with a surgical procedure are demonstrated by meeting the anticipate need of the surgeon and other team members. handles all sharps in such a manner as to avoid injury to and/or contamination of the surgical team, per hospital policy. Opens and sets up sterile supplies using appropriate sterile technique, in a standardized manner using department procedures. Applies principles of asepsis to maintain the highest standard of sterile technique.

  • Knows where instruments, sponges, laps, and needles are at all times during procedure. Participates with circulating nurse and physicians regarding correct/incorrect sponge and needle counts per hospital policy.

  • As assigned, checks surgical rooms at the beginning of shift to determine readiness for immediate use.

  • Consistently and promptly cleans and prepares instruments for pickup by Sterile Processing department.

  • Identifies breaks in aseptic technique and correct and /or report it to the proper authority.

  • Appropriately prepares all specimens for laboratory analysis per procedure.

  • Ability to take call for day, night, weekend and holidays to provide 24-hour coverage.

  • Resource Utilization:

  • Ensures that appropriate supplies and equipment are available, accounted for, and used in a cost-effective manner. Responsible for daily restocking of department. Responsible for washing dirty instruments, cleaning rooms, and taking used equipment to dirty utility room.

  • Helps to provide a clean, comfortable environment for customers and others by taking appropriate safety precautions and responds to urgent safety situations effectively.

  • Productivity:

  • Organizes, prioritizes and completes activities in an efficient manner. Demonstrates initiative in assisting others and performing other duties based on skill level and training orientation. Self motivated.

  • Quality Improvement Program:

  • Participates in department problem solving, suggests improvements, and facilitates change.

Skills:

  • Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge of basic surgical techniques and procedures in the assessment, treatment and care of patient in a variety of age groups, which may include neonatal, adolescent, or adult.

  • Knowledge of surgical procedures as demonstrated by meeting the anticipate need of the surgeon and other team members.

  • Good interpersonal skills, demonstrated by efficient communications, acceptance of criticism, and the willingness to help others.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with patients, families, staff and medical professionals.

  • Sufficient skills and attributes required fulfilling the essential job functions as defined under accountabilities for a specific area or unit.

  • Knowledge of and ability to apply universal safety precautions and infection control procedures.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform the physical demands of the position, as well as the essential job functions.

Minimum Position Requirements:

Licenses/Certifications: BLS

Preferred Position Qualifications:

Education: Coursework/Training - Some college.

Experience: 1 year Acute Care setting as an OB Technician or Surgical Technician

Licenses/Certifications: Certification as a Surgery Technician
