Location: Eureka, CA

Work Schedule: Full Time - 80 Biweekly Hours

Shift: 8-hour, Evenings

Job Summary:

Under the supervision of the Manager of Nutrition Services and/or the Department Supervisor, the cook, both A.M. and P.M. positions, prepares all hot food for patients, coffee shop, and catering using primarily scratch cooking methods. Uses institutional cooking equipment such as stoves, steamer, slicer, food processor, mixer, etc. Uses standardized recipes and pre-established portion control guidelines. Dishes up food on patient trayline. Cleans cooking area, including all equipment.

Essential Functions:

  • Accurately follows standardized recipes and production charts. Maintains proper portion control. Produces high quality, consistent food products in the needed quantities. Completes work in allotted time.

  • Pulls needed items so they can be thawed before cooking. Does necessary prep work properly. Returns food products to freezer after production process. Utilizes leftovers properly. Stores and labels all food items using proper food safety procedures.

  • Adheres to department infection control and food safety policies. Wears gloves, proper hair coverings, and uniforms. Maintains impeccable personal hygiene.

  • Works cooperatively with others. Assists others, when possible. Treats co-workers with dignity and respect.

  • Completes all cleaning assigned to the position. Keeps the walk-in refrigerator and freezers in good order. Maintains a clean, sanitary, uncluttered work area during production. Takes and records all trayline temperatures for each meal on production sheets.


  • Resource Utilization: Ensures that appropriate supplies and equipment are available, accounted for, and used in a cost-effective manner.

  • Safety: Helps to provide a clean, comfortable environment for customers and others by taking appropriate safety precautions and responds to urgent safety situations effectively.

  • Productivity:

  • Organizes, prioritizes and completes activities in an efficient manner.

  • Demonstrates initiative in assisting others and performing other duties based on skill level and training orientation.

  • Quality Improvement Program: Participates in department problem solving, suggests improvements, and facilitates change.


  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

  • Ability to speak effectively with customer and employees.

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form

Preferred Position Qualifications:

Experience: Food production and cooking experience.
