We are looking for a Infection Prevention Specialist for Infection Control at St. Mary Medical Center.

Location: Apple Valley, CA

Work Schedule: Full Time - 80 Biweekly Hours

Shift: 8-hour, Days

Job Summary:

The Infection Control Practitioner is responsible on a daily basis to provide surveillance; consultation and ongoing education related to Infection Control and Epidemiology practices to hospital and ambulatory care departments. The Infection Control Practitioner also coordinates activities in concert with the department Director in support of the development and implementation of program goals and design elements, the formulation of surveillance systems, assessment instruments, and intervention strategies; the preparation of policies and procedures, the analysis and evaluation of quantitative data and descriptive information, the development of monitoring functions; compliance with accreditation regulatory codes and standards. The Infection Control Practitioner works independently and requires limited supervision.

Essential Functions:

  • Coordinates and performs comprehensive surveillance activities and applies an epidemiological approach to the identification of emerging infection control issues, including chart review, record-keeping, updating of databases, and preparation of summary reports.

  • Provides a professional consulting role on interventions to address infection control and epidemiological issues for hospital and ambulatory care staff, physicians, and where applicable, patients.

  • Actively participates in the research, development and implementation of current infection control policies and practices, working collaboratively with related hospital departments and staff to ensure appropriate and workable systems.

  • Provides an ongoing framework of formal and informal educational programs to hospital personnel to facilitate awareness of and compliance to current infection control practices.

  • Assists in the coordination and preparation of agenda items for the Infection Control Committee to assure that issues requiring committee action are fully researched and presented in a timely manner, and that progress to established committee goals is made.

  • Performs environmental rounds, in concert with the Safety Committee process, to survey infection control practices and identify issues, with coordination of reports back to area supervisors on related compliance issues.

  • Designs and develops surveillance strategies and programs to collect and analyze information for the purpose of documenting, monitoring and evaluating individual and aggregate infection control performance data.

  • Designs, develops, and implements infection control audits, risk assessment, intervention strategies, and corrective action plans which prevent or reduce nosocomial infection transmission.

  • Prepares technical and administrative policies and procedures for the prevention and control of transmissible etiological agents.


  • Knowledge of Infection Prevention and Control, Microbiology, and Performance Improvement.

  • Inter-personal skills in communicating with all customers.

  • Ability to identify, assess, and implement solutions to problems at the point of service.

  • Computer Skills.

Minimum Position Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's Degree in Health care-related science or equivalent experience.

  • Coursework/Training - Complete formal training within the 1st year of hire into the position.


  • Two (2) years of experience working in an acute care hospital.

  • Two (2) years of experience in Infection Prevention and Control.

License / Certifications:

  • License as required to practice in a specific discipline.

  • Certification in Infection Control.

Preferred Position Qualifications:

Education: Coursework/Training - Completion of advanced APIC or equivalent class related to Infection Control/ Employee Health.


  • Experience with statistical analysis techniques.

  • Experience with Microsoft word processing and database management applications software.
